Greg TuckerParticipantBut we know differently. #USRPT does work.
Here’s another piece on anecdotal, but impressive, info.
Boy HS swimmer. Breast and IM. Had an IT band issue, so we had him swim free with pull buoy in USRPT sets. He was still too injured at the end if the week to swim his main events in our big mid-year, mini-taper meet. We put him in the 50 free cause he did want to miss swimming with his team. Previous best was 23 mid in 50 free. Popped a 21 high. Has since swam 20 point on a 200 free relay. I don’t recall those types if things happening previously with traditional training.
Regarding the study I would love to see 36 week evaluation
USRPT > TT > USRPT
vs
TT > USRPT > TT
With inter- and Intra subject testing.

Greg TuckerParticipantAre you training specifically for the 50 back? And only the 50 back?

Greg TuckerParticipantWe have had success with lingo that says “success is failure, failure is success”.
We also stress personal accoutabity to keep up with your times, reps to failure, leaving on time, etc).

Greg TuckerParticipantI don’t recall the hull speed concept. Sorry.
Your training sounds like low yardage traditional training with sprint sets mixed in. If so, that’s different than USRPT. The most amazing thing to me is that swimmers do not have to b tapered to swim personal beats. It can happen anytime. Does that happen in your program?
We tried the mostly underwater, no breathing breaststroke at the end if the girls season. It was a bit disruptive to their rhythm. We may try it again next year earlier in the season.

Greg TuckerParticipantFor those training above race distance (e.g. 200 race pace for 100 distance), what is it that you believe you are getting from this kind of training? Not saying it’s bad, just wondering why.

Greg TuckerParticipantWe would not “train up” in our program, the greatest fear being that if you train at 200 pace you will race at 200 pace.
At the Lawrence Clinic, Rushall showed a chart that for 100 race distance, you would only do reps of 25 and 50 at race pace.
We had a girl this year that never swam more than 25 fly in practice.
She swam faster and faster throughout the year, then absolutely crushed her PR in Medley Relay and 100 fly at our State meet. We did do 2-3 dive 50s per week, but only to work on breath control (none on the way out, one breath at turn, none on the way back). She swam these less than race pace.Just my $0.02.

Two (or three) sets are preferred in my opinion. Depends on what you are training for and how close to the meet you are.
Regarding technique, you should be incorporating this into you USRPT sets. If you want to swim fast with technique, then you need to train fast with technique if you are doing technique sets at less than race pace, you are developing incorrect neuromuscular adaptation.
Just my $0.02. Good luck. Keep doing USRPT. You will get faster. Guaranteed.

Greg TuckerParticipantHello everyone
I am Greg. I help coach a HS girls swim team in Boulder, CO. We used USRPT this year and were pleased with the results. Our girls love the program. I look to share our experiences and learn from others. In a separate thread I will start a question for the group on training for the IM. Let’s make this forum work. Best to all.
